No Shortcuts, Be a Leaven, Roll Up Your Sleeves!

A year ago, the Economy of Francesco began its journey with young economists, entrepreneurs, and change-makers from all over the world. Thousands of them packed their bags with enthusiasm and commitment. From their first ‘yes,’ they started a process of change towards a just, inclusive, and sustainable economy. Before the event in November, over 300 preparatory events took place around the world: in universities, parishes, businesses, and even global organizations. Many webinars were held, looking towards a world that can envision a different kind of economy.

Here are some impressions from the three youth emcees of the three-day event, Catalina  Hinojosa from Ecuador, Jena Espelita from the Philippines, and Amine Sahnouni, a Muslim youth from Algeria, who led the live event.

Catalina recounts:The Economy of Francesco started when Pope Francis sent a letter to young people, asking that we find a new economic model together, not only one model but several economic alternatives that already exist in the world or that can exist. We young people wanted to respond to his call and decided to get together and start talking about these economic alternatives, to move away from an economic model that exploits people and doesn’t focus on human beings. We split into what we called “villages,” in which different groups looked at different subjects.”

Jena explains: “The months spent working together in the “villages” resulted in 12 points that we identified. They are very important points like the abolition of tax havens, the stewardship of common goods, the right to decent work for all, quality education, and the introduction of an independent ethics committee in every bank. In my opinion, these 12 points are quite clear and say exactly where we want to go.” She adds: “During those days, there were almost 200,000 views, which is a lot because we only expected 2,000 people to come for the event, which was originally scheduled in March 2020.”

Pope Francis, in his message on the third day, reflects with the youth participants, “Each of you, starting from the places where you work and make decisions, can accomplish much. Do not seek shortcuts, however attractive, that prevent you from getting involved and being a leaven wherever you find yourselves. No shortcuts! Be a leaven! Roll up your sleeves!”

Amine, struck with Pope’s words, shares: “The Pope’s message is universal because he’s inviting everyone to be part of this initiative, to be committed to solving the world’s problems. For me, the message is really strong, even about being “creative.” You have to understand yourself first: what you want to do in this world and how to make your own contribution.” He continues: “I was struck by the little girl, whom I would describe as a “great girl,” whom we heard in the session called ‘Young Enough to Change the World.’ Her name is Lilly from Thailand, and she’s doing an amazing job! Only 13 years old, she is very actively committed to ecology. Her story is really inspiring!”
