Living a Greater Love

Bunny, his wife Marg, and their daughters, Luce and Luna, live at Sulyap ng Pagasa, a housing project of the Focolare Movement in Quezon City. Last March 12, 2023, during the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the conferral of the honorary doctorate in theology to Chiara Lubich by the University of Santo Tomas, Luce and Luna shared how they put into practice the “Art of Loving” at home and in school.

I am Luna, and I’m in Grade 2. I want to share my experience on how I loved my enemy.

There was a time when my friend and I were in the library, and she got mad at me because she thought I was not listening to her, which was not true. She was already raising her voice at me, and I was starting to get mad at her. Yet I made an effort to talk to her calmly, gently asking what made her think I was not listening. I repeated what she was saying to prove that I was really listening. Suddenly, she was no longer mad at me and promised not to shout at me again, and we continued playing.

Hi! I am Luce, and I’m in Grade 8. I want to share how I practice being the first one to love in the family.

At home, we do not have a helper, so we do all the household chores by ourselves. One day, we all came from school and were very tired because of some school activities and the heavy traffic that night. We had a quick dinner since everyone wanted to sleep early. When I was about to enter our room, I noticed that our doors and windows were not locked yet so, instead of reminding my dad to do it, I decided to lock the doors and windows myself.

That night, it was also my mom’s turn to wash the dishes, but I saw her resting inside the bedroom already. I wanted to be the first one to love at that moment, so I immediately went to the kitchen and washed the dishes for her. I also prepared our water tumblers for the following day to show some extra love.

When we woke up the next morning, my parents were surprised at what I did for them. They appreciated my help, and as a reward, we ate my favorite breakfast on our way to school. They also gave me extra game time for what I did. I felt so happy that they felt my love for them.
