We must debunk the myth of pursuing relationships or engaging in discussions only with like-minded people. Instead, it is important to relate with those who also have different ideas contrary to ours. Diversity activates creativity and enables us to see new perspectives.
We often regard those whose beliefs are different from ours as difficult to deal with. However, let us try to enter their world; let us try to understand their past, their upbringing. Let us try to see their reality through their eyes. But let us be conscious to avoid stressful or “toxic” discussions that lead nowhere and merely disturb harmony among us. Rather, seek an alliance with such people, maybe find a common ground, so as to find a common vision.
Do not be afraid of confrontation as long as you know how to control your emotions.
So if you detach yourself from your ideas, you will be better able to accept another’s. Often, in doing so, you’ll see qualities you never imagined present emerge from him. When he feels that you are listening to him wholeheartedly, it is possible that he will make an effort to listen to your perspective too. Generally, when an apparent adversary feels welcomed and respected, he becomes calmer and ready to welcome others too.
Here are other useful tips: look for the right time and space to talk; check your negative emotions; do not be too “wordy,” but talk simply and with much humility so that the other will not feel inferior.
This is the art of a successful dialogue. It is not a debate with clear winners and losers, but a method of alliance and of finding common goals.
