During holidays or vacations, my wife and kids get themselves involved in a thousand things that scare me. How can I rest, regain a bit of strength, and free my mind from making decisions, the confusion of urban life, and work stress? (R.M.)
Summers and holidays are a good opportunity to rediscover those rhythms of life which more closely suit our deepest needs and which are often obscured by the daily stress of work and running a family.
But it is also a special time to bond with family members whose idea of a vacation may be totally different from yours especially if they are younger than you by a generation! It is understandable that some of their plans may “drive you crazy” – sky-diving, wind-surfing, experiencing the night-life… I think it would be great if before going on vacation, you involve the whole family in planning your itinerary together.
This is a good opportunity to listen to each other and to create a healthy atmosphere, learning how to be considerate of the needs of each member of the family.
Allow each one to freely express their ideas and desires – including your own – and come up with a plan that will make everyone happy: adventure time, quiet time, food trips, even a moment of just yourself and the wife for a relaxing day at the spa while the kids run around enjoying their freedom and your trust.
