Gemma Atienza shares how her encounter with a social center and the spirituality that animates it made a difference in her life journey from the time she became one of its scholars until the present as a public school teacher in Laurel, Batangas.
Whenever I look back at my life, I can truly say that I was one of the young people who were given real hope. I grew up in a simple family, and like many Filipino families, we also experienced how difficult it was to dream when life’s opportunities are limited. Many things seemed beyond my reach, and I never imagined that I would have the chance to go to college.
But Pag-asa Social Center changed that.
Through the generosity of my sponsors, the dedication of the staff, and all the people who became instruments of God’s love, I was given the opportunity to study and finish my education. But as the years went by, I realized that Pag-asa gave me much more than education. More than a scholarship, I was introduced to a larger family — the Focolare Movement.

It was in Pag-asa that I first experienced a community that genuinely strives to live a life of love and unity. As a scholar back then, I was impressed by the way I and my fellow scholars were treated. We were not treated simply as beneficiaries, but as members of a family. We felt that we were important, that there were people willing to accompany us in our growth and development as people.
Little by little, we were introduced to the spirituality of Chiara Lubich. Although I never met her personally, her life and teachings have had a profound impact on me. One of the deepest lessons I learned was to see every person as a child of the same Father — someone with dignity, value, and worthy of love.
And I carry those lessons with me to this day.
Today, as a teacher in Batangas, I can say that a significant part of who I am and how I teach has been shaped by Pag-asa and by the spirituality of Focolare. In my own little way, I try to share the culture of love and the spirituality of unity that I first encountered here.
What makes me especially happy is seeing how the spirituality of Focolare is slowly finding expression in more lives in Batangas. Through my work and simple sharing, students, co-teachers, and friends have had the opportunity to get to know the Pag-asa Social Center, Bukas Palad, and even the Economy of Communion. Some young people were inspired and given opportunities for growth and development because of the scholarship programs and formation experiences that were introduced to them.
For me, this is one of the most beautiful fruits of what I received from Pag-asa and the Focolare. The blessings I received back then did not end with me alone. They continue to reach other people, other families, and other young people who are also searching for hope and purpose.
And every time I see someone rediscover hope, I am reminded that God continues to work through ordinary people who are willing to love.
That is why my heart is filled with gratitude.

Thank you, Pag-asa Social Center, because you not only helped me and other young people earn a diploma. You loved us, formed us, and gave us direction in life.
Thank you, Focolare Movement, for showing us that unity is possible in a world filled with differences.
And thanks to all the sponsors, staff, volunteers, and all the people who continue to live the ideal “May they all be one” (John 17:21).
Because of you, many young people like me have received not only education, but also a family, a deeper faith, and renewed hope.
