Approaching its 30th anniversary, Pag‑asa celebrates a journey marked by faithfulness in working to improve the quality of life for those on the margins of society. Hope, for Pag‑asa, is not just a feeling but a daily choice — to stand with and accompany each person, affirming that every life deserves to be seen, heard, and loved.

The Pag‑asa Social Center was born almost spontaneously from the Focolare community’s desire to love their neighbors in the hills surrounding Mariapolis Peace in Tagaytay. During regular barrio visits, members encountered the difficult realities faced by many families. One case became emblematic: Ronald, a young boy slowly losing his eyesight to a progressive disease. His condition threatened both his dream of schooling and his family’s already fragile livelihood.

At the same time, more than 10,000 kilometers away, an Italian couple suffered the tragic loss of their 24‑year‑old son, Silvio, who died of a heart attack on January 9, 1997, months after a car accident. Amid their grief, they felt called to transform their suffering into love. As friends and relatives offered support, they asked how these gifts could help others. Natalina, Silvio’s mother, remembered her brother in Mariapolis Peace and the many children in need there. She realized this was the right place to direct the donations. Their generosity funded Ronald’s eye operation — and later, the schooling and support of hundreds more.

From this convergence of circumstances, the Pag‑asa Social Center Foundation emerged in 1996 as a “living laboratory” of the Focolare’s spirituality of unity. What started as a response to immediate needs has grown into a holistic sanctuary for hundreds of disadvantaged children and their families. Through its Support‑at‑a‑Distance (SAAD) program, medical clinic, and human formation sessions, Pag‑asa moves beyond simple charity work toward true accompaniment — offering not just school supplies or nutrition, but a steady, loving presence that refuses to let go of a child’s hand.

From a stockroom in a carpentry shop with a handful of volunteers, Pag‑asa has expanded into a full-fledged social center with 14 staff members and a wide range of facilities. Today, it supports 300 children from 222 indigent families, mostly from Tagaytay, with a handful from Noveleta (Cavite), and Laurel and Agoncillo (Batangas). Pag-asa is assisted by local and foreign staff, with some volunteer youth and seminarians.

Beyond its local footprint, Pag-asa has been transformed into a national benchmark for excellence. The foundation was honored as one of the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s Top 5 Outstanding Social Work Agencies in 2024 and secured the prestigious regional Panata Ko Sa Bayan award for two consecutive years (2024-2025).
