A contribution of 4.5 million euros (5 million dollars) from the European Union (EU) has enabled the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) to provide vital support for the global response to the pandemic, allowing the transport of humanitarian personnel and goods needed to fight COVID -19 to destinations around the world. As global supply chains experience unprecedented disruptions as a result of measures to stop the spread of the disease, WFP has put its experience and extensive operational capability to serve the humanitarian community. Through its Global Common Services Plan, WFP has determined the logistical backbone of the global response to the pandemic. Leveraging a network of eight humanitarian response centers around the world, which are joined by air, road, and sea links, WFP has shipped over 148,000 cubic meters of critical health goods to date. The supplies, including ventilators and personal protective equipment, were transported to 173 countries on behalf of 72 organizations. WFP also transported over 28,000 health and humanitarian workers from 424 organizations to 68 destinations and, as part of its role in the United Nations Medevac service, carried out 121 medical evacuations globally. The humanitarian personnel were transported to 173 countries on behalf of 72 organizations.
